Local Waters Turn Deadly Over Weekend

Water Related Deaths At Inner Harbor, Aboard Middle River Boat

POSTED: 10:49 am EDT July 5, 2008
UPDATED: 12:24 pm EDT July 6, 2008

Water turned deadly in two separate incidents this weekend. The body of a 19-year-old man was found in the Inner Harbor on Friday. Baltimore County Fire Department spokesman Kevin Cartwright said the man was in the 1400 block of Lancaster Street in the Harbor East area when he went into the water around 11:30 p.m. It's unclear whether he jumped, fell or was pushed into the water. However, officials said they do not suspect foul play in the incident.

A good Samaritan attempted to rescue the man but was unsuccessful. Rescue crews pulled him out of the water unharmed. The other man was pulled from from the water unconscious and unresponsive. He was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he later died.

In Middle River, one man is dead after a carbon monoxide emergency aboard a boat at the Parkside Marina. Division Chief Michael Robinson of the Baltimore County Fire Department said the unidentified man was unresponsive when rescue crews arrived late Friday night. He later died at Franklin Square Hospital. Two other people got sick on the boat but survived.

This is the fourth death in a year at the marina attributed to carbon monoxide. Robinson said crews detected dangerous levels of carbon monoxide in the air aboard the boat. The cause of the gas leak is under investigation.

Baltimore County fire officials spent Saturday talking to people about water safety at local marinas.
