BALTIMORE -- The WBAL TV 11 News I-Team has learned that trauma center doctors will start Thursday morning consulting with EMS crews before a Medevac helicopter is dispatched. The new policy will only concern patients who have Category C or D trauma, meaning the victims could appear to be OK but actually have suffered internal injuries, according to doctors. The new policy follows the state police helicopter crash last week in Prince George's County that killed four people. One teenager survived the crash.
The role of trauma doctors will be to consult but not necessarily overrule first responders, I-Team reporter David Collins said. If there is a dispute, the new policy also provides EMS crews with the opportunity to have cases red-flagged for later review.Maryland's top medical officials will also be convening a national panel of experts to review the state's protocols and operation. They said they hope to have the panel in place early next month.
